Caged Soul

Blender, Substance 3D Painter

Process

For this project I wanted to take the opportunity to learn more about Substance 3D Painter and get acquainted with the software's many generators. I was inspired by a sprite of a soul trapped in a bird cage on top of a toy wagon from the game Deltarune and decided to recreate in 3D with a semi-realistic style.

I created the low poly base in Blender, which I then subdivided the mesh in order to sculpt in details for the high poly.

Then I brought the low poly and high poly meshes to Substance 3D painter in order to bake several mesh maps to the low poly. I utilized vertex painting in Blender to bake a color ID map, which simplified the texturing process.

In Substance 3D painter, I took advantage of the program's generators and filters to texture the mesh. For the wagon, I used anchor points and the curvature generator to create the rust lining in the chipped paint. The blur slope and Anisotropic Kuwahara filters for the metal cage.
