Utilizing 3D Software For Concept Art

When creating 2D concepts sketches for props, I've found it useful to use a 3D software like Blender or Maya in order to block out basic shapes. Having a 3D primitive model can also be helpful when producing orthographic views for the final 2D sketch. I used this technique to create 5 different prop concepts for Veilwood.

Concept Art: Enemies

As the concept artist for Veilwood, I was tasked with creating 16 different unique enemies that the player will come across. I design monsters with a variety of color palettes and silhouettes while maintaining a consistently eerie tone and style. I also put the character in different orthogonal views in order to ensure easy translation to 3D.

Metal Combat Automaton

IMG_3170.png

The Metal Combat Automatons are created by the the cult in Veilwood. These automatons are meant to reflect the cult's technological advancements and use of human remains.

Mandrake

Untitled_Artwork 2.png

Mandrakes are one of the many unique crops in the game, this one is able to jump out of the ground and run away from the player once it's fully grown. It has root-like limbs with the arms made especially long so they can flail around when it runs.

Pollinator

IMG_3173.png

The Pollinator is a creature similar to a butterfly or a moth in which it's able to pollinate certain crops and is drawn to fire. It has vibrant wings in order to be distinguishable at night.

Imbued Scarecrow

Untitled_Artwork 3.png

The Imbued Scarecrow comes alive at night to attack the player.

Deerstalker

Untitled_Artwork 5.png

A seemingly innocent deer roaming around the player's farm can transform into the deerstalker. This deer is corrupted by the mist of Veilwood resulting in exposed bones and mutated limbs.

Plant Mimic

Untitled_Artwork.png

The plant mimic uses its flower shaped nose to hide in the ground disguised as a crop.

Concept Art: NPCS

Along with the enemies, I also conceptualized 13 different characters, design accordingly to their roles in the town and their personalities.

Botanist

IMG_3176.png

A friendly NPC that sells seeds and other supplies for farming to the player. I experimented with common fashion for women in the 19th century while incorporating the usual overalls that gardeners of the time would wear.

Lumberjack

IMG_3177.png

The lumberjack provides the service of cutting down and removing trees for the player. I adjusted the design to fit the time period as opposed to the stereotypical lumberjack look.

Apothecary

IMG_3179.png

A mysterious NPC that provides medicine and other concoctions. The purple in her design signifies her use of the mist for her work.

Tinkerer

IMG_3178.png

The Tinkerer provides her inventions to the player to use for their farm. I took inspiration from 19th century blacksmiths, inventors, and a bit of the mad scientist trope.

Gravedigger

This stoic NPC's works at the towns cemetery.

Carpenter

The Carpenter sells handcrafted furniture to the player.

Reflection

While I worked as a concept artist on Veilwood, I worked closely with other members of the team from different departments. I went back and forth often with the producer and creative director and played around with a lot of variations of concepts in order to meet our creative direction for the game. I also created the concept art with the 3D implementation in mind and communicated frequently with the 3D artists in order for them to produce effective 3D renditions of these concepts. With Veilwood being the second project where I took on the role of lead artist, I was able to use my past experience while learning more aspects of the role.
